cameron moll : brooklyn bridge poster

lg-bridge Cameron Moll's letterpress masterpiece of type is not just a beautiful representation of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. "In the artwork, there’s a metric tonne of hidden text: names of the architect, engineers, and laborers that perished; shops and restaurants in Brooklyn; and other items with relation to the bridge...The time spent designing the artwork was more than 300 hours, but the time spent doing research—trips to Brooklyn, studying the bridge, selecting typefaces, thoroughly annotating The Great Bridge—is easily double or triple that amount.”

You may notice the typo in "Brooklyn" on the images -- there's a funny story to go along with that too. Check out his website dedicated to the project and explore options for purchase. Bravo Cameron!

paperfinger-workshop-msw1 From the offices of Martha Stewart Weddings, to my own Brooklyn studio, to the floral studio of Poppies & Posies, to several co-hosted workshops: in Portland with Neither Snow and at the letterpress headquarters of Regas New York, I had the pleasure of hosting quite a few calligraphy workshops in 2013 and met lots of lovely folks in the process. Stay tuned for the next series later this spring (subscribe for updates at the bottom of this post).

The workshop sweep continues! I've been hosting folks for intro workshops these past few days, continuing on through this week. Each class receives a full kit of calligraphy staples and my favorite tools plus a workbook of exercises and tips. We end the workshop with a project focus on elegant correspondence and how to make your letters, notes and envelopes look their best. Of course, this whole process is accompanied by plentiful wine and cookies. If only my work day was as well. :)

Looking forward to a couple new groups tonight and tomorrow. For info on upcoming workshops, sign up here.

brooklyn grange rooftop farm : collaborative wedding shoot

paperfinger-les-loups I am so thrilled with the images from Ro of Les Loups Photography from a recent wedding shoot at the nearby Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm. As soon as I heard the line-up of collaborators, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

The shoot was produced by Viva Max Weddings; florals and design by Molly Oliver Flowers; catering by Parker Red; make-up by Blades Natural Beauty; hair by Jackie Schneider Beauty. (Additional vendor and shoot details below.)

Paperfinger contributed new designs just for the shoot -- a tall and narrow slanted calligraphy invitation with watercolor border; a coordinated modern slanted menu design with watercolor heading and matching table numbers. It all came together so well, here's a look at lots of wonderful images. What a killer spot!

Thanks again to Les Loups for all the photos and to this amazing team.

The belt pouch ($78) is also great and seems super handy. For high design reflectivity, check out the Tufts and Lightning Vest, both pictured below.

paperfinger retreat : fresh baked vision

Had another fantastic day yesterday on the official Paperfinger retreat. We hopped from one cozy cafe or eatery to another. Apparently the smell of fresh baked goods does wonders for the process of contemplating our vision and goals.

Above, our spread of papers and Margaret, contented, at Bakeri.

Tomorrow I'll share the retreat agenda that I encourage you to use! No matter how small you are, I can't tell you how hugely worthwhile and energizing it is to make this kind of time for your business.

Contemplating our mission (and lunch) at the Williamsburg waterfront.

Appreciating the handwritten menus at Saltie.

At Paperfinger, we take our dreams seriously. Margaret lives out one of hers at the Mast Brothers Chocolate Factory.

ny times : a history of new york in 50 objects

The New York Times invited historians and museum creators to produce A History of New York in 50 Objects, as inspired by The British Museum and BBC Radio's A History of the World in 100 Objects. They're inviting comments/submissions as well, with full understanding that this is a history, not the history. It's a wonderful collection and a fun way to brush up on the city's history.

  • a stump section from the long-gone famous elm tree believed to grant performers good luck on stage at The Apollo Theater;
  • a letter from Dutchman Pieter Schaghen in 1626 about the purchase of Manhattan for $24 from Native Americans;
  • a lox bagel;
  • and an audio track from Johnny Carson's ‘Tonight Show’ in 1962.
