cindy sherman : for louis vuitton

I was surprised and intrigued to see artist Cindy Sherman's creation for Louis Vuitton's Iconoclasts series, in celebration of the brand's 160th anniversary. She created the Studio in a Trunk featuring drawers, a folding stool and adorned with vintage hotel labels -- as well as a Camera Messenger bag.

Fitted with a luxurious vanity case, a Camera Messenger bag and a total of 31 drawers (to accommodate treasures large and small), the trunk’s interior dazzles with hues borrowed from the plumage of Mister Frida, the artist’s pet macaw. The Studio in a Trunk is produced in a limited edition of 25.

barca for mayor : healing kaua'i

Dustin Barca Run for Mayor 103 Just got back from a week on the island of Kaua'i where an inspiring mayoral race is underway. New candidate, Dustin Barca, a native of Kaua'i, returned to the island after a tour as a professional surfer and took his activist spirit into the political realm by running for mayor. (Mayors govern each individual island in Hawaii.) We saw signs, bumper stickers, shirts promoting him everywhere on the island.

Even in his campaign posters, he is approachable in a t-shirt and kind face, standing in a field -- and after reading interviews and campaign literature, it's clear he's a passionate advocate for his home. He is focusing specifically on the restoration of Kauaian culture; sustainable agriculture; restoring the islands original waterways and addressing the local drug problem through rehabilitation programs and less imprisonment. "For the people, from the heart."

Barca impressively launched his campaign with a literal "run" for mayor by completing a 4-day, 90-mile marathon across the entire island to get the word out. Best of luck, Barca!!

highlights from portugal : sintra, the algarve & lisbon

paperfinger-sintra Our sisters week in Portugal, captured in a few select photos. What a magical place -- I loved every aspect of being there. Beautiful historical architecture; romantic landscapes; warm and friendly people; delicious food and espresso everywhere! and many simple moments to savor.

We traveled in Sintra and the surrounding areas then drove south to the Algarve region, followed by a short stint in Lisbon. Stupendous. Would love to return.

lake quinault : with angie smith

angiesmithphotography-quinault-1 Traveling with a talented photographer friend like Angie Smith ensures you will have beautiful images for remembering your adventures.

A few weeks ago, Angie and I spent a weekend in Washington state on the Olympic Peninsula, spending a night at the historic Lake Quinault Lodge in the Olympic National Forest. Here are some of her photos (you can spy me in the lawn below).

isla palenque : panama

IPaerialPalenque Next on our Panama trip, we spent a while on the Pacific side in the Gulf of Chiriqui. We stayed at a beautiful newly-opened eco-resort, Isla Palenque, which is situated on a secluded 400-acre island. The island is home to dense jungle, mangroves and quiet beaches. Plus the not-so-quiet howler monkeys. They were everywhere! So cute to see them swinging from the tree tops -- and slightly intimidating to hear them howl deeply in packs up above. Yikes!

A perfect outdoor shower.

san blas islands : panama

flight-view Here's part one of some pics from our trip to Panama.

We started with a way-too-tiny flight to the San Blas Islands, which we explored by sail for a few days. The San Blas islands are governed by the Guna Yala people, an indigenous Indian population and the archipelago is made up of about 350 little islands, mostly uninhabited.

It was HEAVEN.

delicatessen with love : gabriele galimberti

2.jpg.CROP_.original-original-700x350 Photographer Gabriele Galimberti traveled to 58 countries for his project, Delicatessen With Love.

In each place, he meet with a grandmother who prepared one of her best meals, posing for a portrait with all the ingredients. Dishes included moose stake in Alaska, caterpillars in Malawi, ten-spice-curry in India and shark soup in the Philippines. And he documented the recipes as well. Above, for example, Inara Runtule, age from Kekava, Latvia. Looks like some sort of herring delight.

I love this idea -- and what a wonderful way to travel!

getaway spot : tipi village retreat

tipivillage06-inside3 I spent a night at the Tipi Village Retreat in Marcola, Oregon, two hours southeast of Portland this weekend. What a special place! It's tipi glamping, basically. And with the nicest hosts, Ken and Susanne, who run it much like a B&B.

Ken cooked up a huge paella feast for dinner in his outdoor kitchen, plus a beautiful breakfast the next morning. It is incredibly relaxed, our tipi was adjacent to a babbling creek, complete with a fire pit in the center of the stone-floored space. We relaxed in hammocks all evening under little lights Susanne strung from the trees alongside the creek. And to top it all off, an outdoor hot tub. I mean, seriously! This place is one I can't wait to return to. Great for couples, small groups or rent the whole place for a party or wedding.

new favorite : sweet grass

SweetgrassBraids This was one of my favorite finds on our road trip out west a couple weeks ago. Sweet grass, dried and braided. Keep it in the car to give the car a sweet, natural scent or place somewhere in your home for a soothing, subtle aroma.

This image and resource comes from the Old West Gypsy Roadside Market, and is a nonprofit working to bring sweetgrass back to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota -- you can order braids online here and support their effort at the same time!
