Seven years ago today, Paperfinger launched online. It's been a joy and a wild ride most every day. :)
My newest class for Skillshare, Pen and Ink Calligraphy: The Art of the Envelope, is live and I'm really excited about it. Covers all the steps for envelope addressing, from inks and how to mix and match colors, choosing papers, technique and logistics, plus considerations for working with clients.
I'm so happy to be joining up with Jen Huang and Poppies & Posies for this three-day workshop series in April. It will be a beautiful setting in Santa Barbara and a great opportunity for folks to settle in to learn and practice photography, event design and calligraphy.

On September 4th, we brought this sweet gal Simone into the world. Needless to say, it has interrupted my blog routine for the month (and maybe every other routine as well) but I'll gradually return to the daily post in October. Best disruption ever, but I look forward to returning to the 'buds!
My dear pal Angie Smith is a wonderful photographer -- she came to see the Paperfinger studio last week and shot this scene of me working. There is about 8 months of baby bump hiding in the shadows under my desk. :) I'm still working away for another few weeks...and what a treat to have a treasured friend come visit.
The full three-part series is now live on Skillshare and it's been really exciting to see the good feedback and projects that students are posting.
The third course in the series is Calligraphy III: Experimenting with Layouts, Surfaces, and Digitization and covers approaches and techniques for applying calligraphy to a wide range of projects.
Calligraphy I: Writing in Classic Modern Script is a one-hour course, broken into 16 short video lessons, four project steps with a whole collection of worksheets and handy resources I created to help with your practice. The final project is to write a meaningful name, quotation, or passage in a simple calligraphy script. This enjoyable project is a perfect way to spend time with words you love, grow your calligraphy skills, and practice making artistic decisions in pursuit of beautiful handwriting.
Skillshare says: "Transform your handwriting into beautiful script in this one-hour class with Brooklyn calligrapher Bryn Chernoff. Always welcoming and encouraging, she covers all the details aspiring calligraphers need to get started. From materials and setting up a workspace to basic shapes, line widths, movement, and connecting individual letters, this class is a comprehensive and thoroughly enjoyable guide. Plus, with 7 Skillshare-exclusive practice pages, a guide for straight lines, and countless inspiration photos, there’s no clearer introduction to the world of nibs, ink, and beautiful writing.
Coming Soon: Two more one-hour, project-based classes from Bryn Chernoff on the art of beautiful handwriting! Watch for Calligraphy II: Diversify Your Script Styles and Calligraphy III: Experiment with Layouts, Surfaces, and Digitization."

This week, I'm filming a three-part workshop series with the Skillshare.com team -- yahoo! They do a wonderful job of offering reputable, interesting and varied online workshops with professionals in a mix of fields. All instructors are selected on an invite-only basis so I'm thrilled to be a part of it -- plus the site technology is really slick, clean and easy to use.
I'll be sharing the news as soon as my classes go live! To be notified by email, sign up at the bottom of this page.
This is a scan from some of today's writing for some new workshop curriculum. This is a taste of what my process looks like: writing various phrases that I then scan and place into page layouts, which then become class worksheets. This way I can cross out any versions I don't like and just crop out the ones I do.
So thrilled with the images from Emily and Marco's wedding at Wave Hill, which is now featured in the 2014 Martha Stewart Real Weddings special issue. It was the result of a lot of hard work by a great team, listed below.
Paperfinger contributed all the calligraphy for print and individual paper goods, as designed and produced by the superb Katie of Katie Fischer Design. You can see the calligraphy invitation suite pictured in the magazine's spread below. It was letterpressed and then each piece hand-painted with a light wash of watercolor by Katie.
This lay drying on a spread of magazines in the studio this week. I feel grateful for the time I spend transcribing a poem like this -- it's the best way to meditate on the words, writing them slowly and carefully. The complete poem text by Maya Angelou is below.
Touched by an Angel
We, unaccustomed to courage exiles from delight live coiled in shells of loneliness until love leaves its high holy temple and comes into our sight to liberate us into life.
Love arrives and in its train come ecstasies old memories of pleasure ancient histories of pain. Yet if we are bold, love strikes away the chains of fear from our souls.
We are weaned from our timidity In the flush of love's light we dare be brave And suddenly we see that love costs all we are and will ever be. Yet it is only love which sets us free.
Visit the shop page for information on my transcription offering for poems, letters or any words of your choice, starts at $125.
