this saturday : the 2009 nyc vendy awards
I am hugely excited for this Saturday's annual event, the Vendy Awards, organized by the remarkable Street Vendor Project. I had the pleasure of volunteering for the project a few years ago. The Street Vendor Project provides legal support to hundreds of New York City's street vendors. There are over 10,000 vendors in this city! They are constantly up against complicated regulations, pissy cops and discrimination. Many of them also cook amazing food. And that's the focus of this Saturday's festivities, where judges and guests will witness a cook-off of the city's best street-side chefs. Think biryani, dumplings, ice cream, waffles, tacos, barbecue, jerk chicken...mmm.
I encourage anyone in the city to buy a ticket. It's $80 until Friday or $100 at the door, which may sound steep but the ultimate goal is to raise money for the Street Vendor Project and support the people that add character, culture and delicious treats to the streets of this city.
