books actually : in singapore
When I lucked out with a spare day in Singapore a few weeks ago (en route to Cambodia), I made a beeline towards Ann Siang Hill in Chinatown. The hotel maps described it as Singapore's "design district" and that it was. The neighborhood itself warrants a complete post (stay tuned), but today's feature is on my favorite discovery in Ann Siang, Books Actually.
Storefront, above; their business cards, below.
Those cards do a good job of explaining what sort of place this. It feels like a gallery, a living room, a studio, a bookstore and a very cool gift shop all wrapped into one. You can explore many of their products in their Flickr gallery; Moleskin notebooks, vintage cameras, artist prints, popular novels, vintage editions. The owners also display their own private collection of colorful Penguin classics of a particular small-dimensions era. I wanted to move in.
On a final, adorable note, see below for an example of the cards which sit in a basket at Books Actually. They encourage customers and guests to slip these inside any of the books for sale, or perhaps inside a book to be gifted. I am liking that.
