bryn listens : merry clayton
Instant goosebump material. I have been paying close attention to Merry Clayton's vocals on the Stones' "Gimme Shelter" ever since watching 20 Feet From Stardom last weekend. Great documentary telling the story of backup singers of the 50's onward to today.
Merry was a very successful backup singer, performing with many greats such as Ray Charles and Bobby Darrin. One evening, she got a call from the Rolling Stones in the middle of the night -- they were recording Gimme Shelter in the studio and decided a woman's voice would add a lot to the song. So she arrived at the studio, with her hair still in rollers and in her nightgown and robe, to sing this part. And she killed it.
